Palin hits a home run

Governor Sarah Palin hit a home run for the RNC last night. She gave an authentic and stirring speech introducing herself and offering both her support for Senator McCain and her opposition to Senator Obama. We are still getting to know who she is and where she stands on various issue but what is known so far has proven to be a galvanizing force for conservative Republicans and religious conservatives in particular. I must admit that I was thrilled to hear of her nomination and the more I have learned about her track record and values the more I like her. I understand that she is more than just a conservative, she is apparently a spirit filled Christian. I have read that she regularly attends an independent charismatic church near her home called Church On The Rock and that when in the state capital she goes to an Assemblies Of God church. She doesn’t want to be pigeon holed as a charismatic/pentecostal however, and I for one think that is a good thing. “Christian” is the only title we should want or need to carry. Without knowing a lot about her, she seems to be the genuine article, a new breed of common sense politicians ready to move America forward. One thing I know she stands for is the right to life for the unborn. She can do little wrong in my mind beyond this most critical issue. Liberals fear she and McCain will overturn Roe v. Wade. They have as much a reason to fear as the little children have to rejoice because I believe they will! What an exciting and historic time we live in. Pray for God’s justice to prevail in this election.

Forgiving Abortion

Someone has written me in response to my forward position on abortion asking whether or not I think a person may be forgiven for such a sin. Let me be clear about what I believe. Within God’s word He has given us standards to live by and through the giving of His divine law He has shown us His values. His word can be appropriately applied to every area of life and as we continue practicing the application of that word we grow in our understanding of it’s implications and proficiency of it’s interpretation. Not only is the explicit breaking of a specific law regarded as sin, but according to the Bible “whatever is not of faith is sin”. In other words not just the breaking of a specific law is sin but also breaking with the spirit of God’s law is sin. Let there be no doubt about it, abortion is sin even if you can’t spell it out in so many words in scripture. The moment conception occurs a new life is given by God and it begins to grow into the person God intends him/her to become. David alluded to this when he explained how God had known his substance within his mother’s womb (Psalms 139:13-16). When David was conceived he was at that moment instantly a person, already having his own physical DNA that began dictating how he was to develop. With only the reception of nourishment, without which no life could survive, from his mother’s womb, David was set on a course of growth and development that required no other outside assistance. He would grow into the man his DNA dictated from the moment he was conceived. The egg could not do this because it is essentially part of a woman’s body. Likewise the sperm could not do this because it too is simply part of a man’s body. When they both come together however they form a new body, a new person, a new life. To terminate life, regardless of it’s developmental stage, is murder. Abortion therefore, no matter what the reason offered to justify it, is murder. Can a person be forgiven for committing murder? Of course! The blood of Christ is capable of cleansing us from ALL unrighteousness, ALL sin! Abortion is not too severe a sin to be forgiven of, it is not more powerful than the precious blood of Christ. His sacrifice was perfect and there is no sin that you may have committed that can nullify the effectiveness of His work. The death of Christ on the cross paid the price for all our sins and He offers forgiveness to all who embrace Him as Lord and Savior. If you have participated in abortion either by having one, performing one, or by encouraging one, then you must do something about it. You need to recognize that it is a sin, no less than the murder of another human being created in the image of God; You need to confess before God that you have sinned and are indeed guilty; and finally you need to ask for God’s forgiveness based upon the shed blood of Christ for your sins. Trust in Christ for your forgiveness and you will be washed clean. After this I encourage you to take a stand for the unborn and support the overthrowing of legalized abortion in America. If you have had an abortion you may also be able to help in another way. If it is possible, why not find a way to turn your abortion into an adoption and help become part of the solution for other women who may be struggling with doing the right thing. God can forgive you for your sin and He wants to turn your tragedy into a triumph for His glory and your good.

Abortion Wrongs

Democrats were awe struck as their newly anointed leader gave a stirring performance last night to a packed out arena at the Democratic National Convention in Denver. Even the media, who is supposed to provide us with unbiased political coverage, cheered the masterfully delivered rhetoric from Senator Obama. He said nothing revolutionary, nothing new, just the same old liberal ideology. He did however suggest that we needed to somehow work to reduce the number of unplanned pregnancies when he mentioned the issue of abortion. In saying this he was effectively throwing a bone to any sympathetic pro-lifers who might be swayed by the spectacle that is Barak Obama. Make no mistake about it however, Obama is pro-death. He fully supports a womans right to kill her unborn child and has vowed to defend that right should he grace the White House. As I have said before, this is the central issue to this election and it cannot be pushed aside as some trivial matter of disagreement. You can talk about the war in Iraq, escalating gas prices, affordable health care, climate change or anything else but none of these issues carry the weight that the holocaust of infanticide does and all of them are affected by it. The blood of over 40 million babies is crying out against this nation and unless we repent of the national sin of abortion we will experience the full weight of reciprocity. I don’t believe God is judging people immediately today as He did prior to the coming of Christ. In the Old Testament we see how He judged nations and kingdoms for their sins with penalties that were completely holistic and utterly horrific. They were obliterated because of their sins but, we are living in a time of grace. God is storing up His wrath for the final days of the rule of men instead of doling out punishments as we go along. That not withstanding, we still live with the Divine law of reciprocity (i.e. sowing and reaping) as a natural judgment for our actions. We will reap what we are sowing and when it comes to America we have sown the blood of the innocent in the name of convenience. We are and will continue to harvest injustice and death so long as we sow it! God does not have to pour out His fierce anger on us for the sin of abortion, all He need do is stop protection us from our enemies, stop blessing us with plenty, stop keeping us in His peace. All God has to do is remove Himself from our nation, as liberals are demanding, and leave us to reap what we have sown. We are only great because of God’s blessing and without it we can fail as easily as any other great nation in history. We must repent and seize the opportunity to get the legal murder of the innocent unborn overthrown! This is the critical issue of this presidential election. It is not a choice of personality, party, or even race. This is a choice of life or death.

Obama / McCain Face Off

I thought the civil forum hosted by Rick warren at Saddleback church was very interesting. It was a groundbreaking event that really showcased the candidate’s distinct positions. I thought it was better than a debate because the final judgment would come from their stand on the issues rather than their charisma or debating skills. I was personally disappointed to see McCain get the Republican nomination because I didn’t feel he was conservative enough. In fact I have viewed this upcoming election as a choosing of the lesser of two evils, that is until this civil forum. I knew that Obama was a staunch supporter of Roe vs. Wade but I didn’t know how adamantly McCain opposed it. He came out with definite clarity on his stand for the fundamental right to life. For me this election shifted right here. The next president will likely be appointing up to 3 new Supreme court justices and their selection will determine whether or not Roe vs. Wade will stand or fall. McCain pledged to appoint the right judges for the job just as Obama pledged to appoint the wrong ones (by wrong I mean liberal judges who will uphold and expand abortion rights). This is not a political issue, it is an issue of justice. Abortion is murder! As the moderator pointed out, over 40 million abortions have been performed since it was legalized, some figures suggest that we have over 1.5 million a year in this country. That my friends is a Holocaust unlike any other in human history! We must bring an end to this destruction of the helpless. The election turned for me because even if I can’t agree with McCain on any other “political” issue, he has committed to stand with the millions of helpless children who will never get the chance to experience life at all without a Supreme Court turn on the issue of abortion. I believe this is truly a life and death election for little ones who can’t cast their vote. Both candidates made their positions clear and only McCain has vowed to reverse the cycle of horror for the unborn millions. Roe vs. Wade is very close to falling and we will make the call by the vote we cast. Let it be said of the American church that we united for Christ and stood against the evil of infanticide when it was our turn to act.

The Shack (God or goddess)

The Shack is now the number one best seller on the Christian Book Sellers Association list and since it is apparently so widely embraced I thought I had better say a little more. Not only does this book absolve the Christian of personal responsibility, commitment to a local church, and devotion to spiritual disciplines, it also portrays God as a cosmic hermaphrodite! This genderless approach to God may be very PC but it doesn’t square with the revelation that God has given us of Himself. The short sighted casual reader may not see the intended destination, but where this book will lead is to the replacement of “Him” with “Her”, of “Father” with “Mother”. These liberal theologians won’t be satisfied until they have not only removed course and offensive words like “blood” from church song books, but also replaced our great and awesome God with the great and awesome Goddess! In the Shack god shows us that he can present himself as either male or female but is not necessarily one way or the other. That notwithstanding however he actually shows more femininity than masculinity even suggesting that if women were in charge the world would be a much better place. Allow me to point out that it was in fact when the woman took the lead role, being deceived, that the universe was plunged into the chaos and darkness it now writhes in. Suggesting the world would be better with women in charge is like saying you might fare better getting hit at 100mph by a Pink semi than if a Blue one hit you at the same speed. No matter how you color it your dead both ways. The purpose of making women superior and portraying God as feminine is to get the reader to rethink their understanding of Him. These kinds of theologians, so eager to please our post modern feminist culture, will take isolated descriptions of God and use them to distort His image. For example in Genesis the Spirit is seen as “hovering”, or brooding, over the waters of the deep like a hen on her nest. This however describes His activity, not His person. It no more demonstrates God as feminine than “hiding under the shadow of His wings” proves Him to be a bird! The simple fact is that the overwhelming repeated revelation of God shows Him to be masculine. Paul even adds his Spirit inspired commentary to Genesis 1:26, 27 by emphatically declaring that it was the man, not the woman, who was created in the image and reflection of God.

For a man ought not to have his head veiled, since he is the image and reflection of God; but woman is the reflection of man. Indeed, man was not made from woman, but woman from man. Neither was man created for the sake of woman, but woman for the sake of man. 1 Corinthians 11: 7-9 NRSV

Woman is a special and unique creation who came from and for man. Man was created lower than the angels who don’t reproduce, marry, or have female counterparts. Never do we see female angels in the Bible because women were only created from and for man. Angels, like man, are created masculine from the pattern of God Himself which is why they are referred to as “sons of God”. The truth about God, from His own mouth, is that He is masculine. According to John 1:18 Jesus is the only person, as second person of the Trinity, qualified to exegete God and He identified Him as “Father”. Not once does He suggest that God could be mother! He never calls Him “Mama” but “Daddy”. God is not an “either or” as this book suggests but He is a He just as He has said. The Shack is cunningly attacking the nature of God, undermining the authority of Scripture, and opening people up to a subtle kind of theological deception that is nothing short of demonic.

The Shack (update)

It seems that “The Shack” is causing more and more controversy. I hear of people getting down right hostile in their disagreements over it’s theological implications. The main reason this book is so successful is because it seems to be helping people understand and relate to God in a totally new way. Someone who candidly shared with me of it’s personal impact in their life said they have seen God in a completely different light than ever before. They actually feel they can better understand God for the first time in their Christian life because of this fictitious novel! Herein lies it’s success and it’s utter failure. People are responding to this book because it gives them a picture of a god they can understand, an American god who fits into an American mold. The god of The Shack is more like us than the mysterious God Who has revealed Himself in the pages of Holy Scripture. For those of you who don’t know it, the Bible is God’s only special revelation of Himself to us. If you ingest something that gives you a different picture of Him than what you have found in the Bible then you have just strayed into the dark and confusing forests of spiritual deception. The simple fact of the matter is that the author of this book has a strange and errant theological bent which is being slipped , like a cyanide pill, into the cool aide of sincere believers. It is bringing a spiritual light to many unlearned and immature believers however the question is not “Does it bring light?” but rather, “What is the source of it’s light?”. Allow me to weigh in on that question right here and now. This work comes from an “angel of light” not “The Light of the world”! Don’t drink the cool aide! Avoid this book like the plague and if you want to find out more about what God is really like then crack open His word and allow His Spirit to lead you and guide you into all truth.

Fire Proof

Last night Melanie and were invited to attend a pastor’s pre-screening for the upcoming movie “Fire Proof”. It was made by the same people who did “Facing The Giants” and stared Kirk Cameron who stared in the eighties sit com “Growing Pains” and is now a born again on fire evangelist for Jesus. It was a church who made the movie, just like FTG but, this flick shows a marked improvement in quality. Some of the acting seemed a bit canned but over all this is a must see movie with a powerful and desperately needed message. Like FTG you better bring a tissue box because it will absolutely rip at your heart strings. The plot revolves around an Albany Georgia fire fighter and his troubled marriage to a hospital PR Spokes person. It opens up at what looks like the end of a seven year marriage but then progresses through a desperate journey to save it. The gospel, of course, is presented in powerful terms and Jesus proves to be the ultimate and only solution. Since we are going through a marriage series on Sunday’s I think this film is very timely. Let’s plan on packing it out on opening night!

The Shack

I just finished reading The Shack. A friend asked if I would read it and declared what a powerful impact it had made on him. It is a very well written work of fiction but I personally don’t enjoy reading fiction. I prefer to read about truth and to learn facts that support my faith. To me fiction is a real waste of valuable time but I’m sure for others it can be an enjoyable diversion. I think fiction is ok if it points to the truth of Scripture but I found myself arguing with the theology that was subtly being introduced through this work. It used what appeared to be something like an allegory of God by introducing the Father as an elderly black woman and the Holy Spirit as an Asian lady. It left Jesus as a Hebrew man. For me this was a disrespectful handling of God as He has chosen to reveal Himself. There are just too many people trying to recreate God in their own image and define Him as they see fit rather than as He has revealed Himself. Other issues I had were how it generally absolved the Christian of any personal devotions such as prayer, reading the Bible, or attending church, all of which are commanded in scripture. I say “Christians” but in this book the fun loving playful Jesus said He didn’t want anybody to become a “Christian” and that he was not supposed to be our pattern for living. “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus”! This is what Scripture teaches! Jesus is our example and we are to grow up into HIM, recreated in His image! You better believe that Jesus is your model to live by and without His example you will create your own fluffy form of spirituality that may seem right but will ultimately rob you of your destiny. This book just drives home the solid truth that we need to be rooted and grounded in the word of the Living God. His eternal word is the only inspired revelation that has come from Him to man. I recommend you avoid this book and drop any other book as soon as it begins to redefine God’s truth from a non biblical perspective.

Sad News

I received the heart wrenching news this morning that Amy Stockstil, wife to pastor Joel Stockstil whose father pastors Bethany World Prayer Center in LA, went home to be with Jesus last night. She had faced a long hard struggle with her health and despite all the hundreds of prayer warriors standing in the gap for her healing, God chose to allow her to make an early home coming. Our hearts go out to the Stockstil family and I would ask that you keep them in your prayers in this difficult season. I can’t imagine the pain pastor Joel must be suffering. Even so, in all things we are more than conquerors through Christ Who loves us.

Because He lives, death cannot win in the end!

Fasting Testimonies

God is so good! It was great to hear all the exciting testimonies of what He has done in the lives of our church family as we sought him through prayer and fasting. No miracle is too big or too small, but they all bring Him glory and should be shared. I was particularly moved by the story of the man who surrendered his life to Jesus after 40 years of a loved one praying for him. Nothing is impossible with God! Persistent sacrifice will pay off.  In the business world it has been said that if you “do today what no one else will; you can live tomorrow like no one else can”. It is true in life that if you sacrifice enough you can achieve almost anything. The problem though is that often the thing you are seeking is really worth less than the things you sacrificed to get it. Not so in the kingdom of God though. Every sacrifice you make in seeking His kingdom will be rewarded with more than you could possibly imagine. The sacrifice of your entire life could not compare with the pay off He offers. You will always receive more than you give to Him. You will determine your reward, how far you go, the life you will live tomorrow by the sacrifices you make for Him today! Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added to you.
